This is my first blog post and i would like to compose a few sentences about hostels. Hostels are a impressive way to travel the world on a budget. From the cheapest to the more grand there is something to accommodate every liking and budget. The impressive thing about
youth hostel is that tons of university students flock to them because they are cheap and fun so there is constantly plenty of student travelers around to get-together with!
In generally eve…

So here we are the kidlet and I awaiting the arrival of the hubby before we're off on our first adventure of the summer: wedding number one! The hubby's brother is getting hitched on Saturday, so we've flown to Vancouver in preparation for the ferry and drive to island in the morning. So far so good, we managed to pack up all the required items for two weddings and a 4 week cruise to Italy and Greece. That was a battle! Thank goodness for on board laundry services! After getting all the bags pac…

So the hubby and I have been together for seven years! Yup that’s about the time the seven-year itch should be setting in! Now let me clarify for you, we have only been married for a year and a half, but we officially met and got together 7 years ago this May. We thought this was a pretty big accomplishment, so off into planning mode we went again! What kind of trip could suffice for this major event? As well, what were we going to do with the Kidlet to allow us a bit of romantic time?
After a…

With the summer months looming in the near distance, I am wondering what planning is going on around me for families and travel. With the current homework struggles that we are having with the Kidlet, we are hoping to all make it to summer unscathed! Our plans have been laid and I thought I would let you know what we are doing for the blissful?!! summer months. Our summer this year includes weddings that have to be planned around, so onto the internet I went to find what we wanted with the stipu…

Spring Break On the Loose!
We recently got back from a week in San Francisco, and we loved it! We started our trip by meeting up with some adult friends who happened to be going on the same flight as we were. Our first three days included visiting with them in San Francisco and driving to Napa Valley to meet up with them. Our hotel, The Argonaut, made us feel very welcome, and the Kidlet fully recommends it as one of the bell man took to him and insisted upon high fives every time we left the b…

If you have lived in the Calgary area for more than one winter I will assume that at some point you have discussed or thought about a family ski trip. Our Rocky Mountains are quite beautiful and the ski hills are close enough to be an option for a day trip. Are you wondering what if anything you should do when it comes to family skiing?
Today we all went to Lake Louise to do a little skiing and snowboarding for the day. We headed out nice and early, and brining along the hubby, Kidlet and the b…

There are a few items this season that I think have extreme potential when traveling with kidlet’s in tow. When traveling by Air, I have found a few products that are must haves for me. Firstly there is a Diaper bag made by Kemby called The Sidekick. This diaper bag not only holds everything you need for your family, including a change mat, bottle cooler bag and wipes container, no this bag has a built in baby carrier!! This diaper bag goes from bag to carrier in a few quick moves, leaving you h…

Spring Break is looming in the distance, and if you're anything like me you are having a hard time seeing the end to this winter weather. Are you planning a big Spring break trip with the kids? Or are you trying to find things to keep them occupied at home while they are underfoot for two weeks? We are planning a trip to San Francisco for a week of the Kidlet's spring break this year. This time when planning our trip, I turned to Expedia.ca. I found the interface easy to use and when you input t…

So the trip to Emerald Lakes turned out better than I hoped. The drive out didn’t consist of the books on tape I had downloaded from Itunes, the Kidlet played video games all the way there and I had a nap while hubby drove on. We arrived late afternoon Friday and were greeted by the amazing staff that arranged to transfer our bags to our cabin. Our cabin was nice, a view of the lake, which is covered in snow, and a fireplace for us to try our hand at again. The only thing missing this year was a…

I have a nine year old boy. Video games, computers, TV and Tamagotchi's are all within my daily vocabulary. If you are anything like me, you have tried various ways to limit your child's exposure to these electronic time wasters. I don't mind some video games now and then, in fact I have been known to play a few myself. But when the first words uttered out of my son's mouth in the morning are: "Can I play some games?" I can be a little less than excited about the days prospects. One day into our…

I can remember a time when Valentine’s Day meant a box of chocolates and a dozen red roses. But when you have children, your Valentines days quickly take a turn for the different. I met my son when he was 2 1/2, so since I met him my Valentine's days have drastically changed, not necessarily for the bad.
This year we plan on attending our second annual Valentine's Day, and Family day long weekend getaway to Emerald Lake Lodge. Last year I thought we would plan a trip out to Emerald Lake Lodge f…

The ABC’s of Child Raising
I found this article in my mom’s drawer from 1995. It was an Ann Landers column and I thought even today, these ideas still have a place in child raising. Love and honesty are assumed, so are not included.
A is for Accountability. Hold your children accountable for their behavior.
B is for Boundaries. Set specific limits, and make clear the repercussions if those limits are exceeded.
C is for Consistency. Hold the same principles and practices.
D is for Discipline. M…

Summer travel with your family can be a great experience, or one that you dread! We have some travel tips to keep you happy and sane on all your trips with little ones in tow.
Car Travel
* Travel during nap times can create a quiet driving experience, though if your children are over 3, they may want to look out the windows.
* Family scavenger hunts, car bingo, or dot to dots and coloring sheets can work well on the go. A product called The Snack N Play car seat tray has a lip so things don't…

Tucson Part 3- Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
I am not sure who loves the zoo more, me or Mari. We both take turns shrieking with delight as we spot a tiger behind a bush or a monkey swinging from a rope. Seeing Mari put her hands together to sign "more" with a twinkle in her eyes always makes my heart do a little flip flop. She truly is a child after my own heart. Sure Ben is a fan of petting a goat or catching a glimpse of a cougar but he is much more interested in seeing how many rocks he can…

I guess I’m just an island girl at heart. I love the casual, relaxed atmosphere of the Florida Keys during the day, and the pulse of action in Key West at night. For a family vacation, I skip the night life, obviously, but there is so much for kids to do in the Keys; I’m hoping my son will become an island boy at heart, too.
It takes about 3 hours from Miami to Key West, so check out our article on Keeping the Kids Occupied en Route for some ideas to pass the time in the car. However, you might…
